Dysphagia-eating and drinking

Dysphagia is a difficulty in swallowing caused by structural and/or neurological damage.

Characteristics of dysphagia include:

• Difficulty coordinating the muscles required for swallowing.
• Choking due to taking food/fluid the wrong way (aspiration).
• Difficulty managing their saliva.
• Coughing during eating and drinking.
• Recurrent chest infections leading to possible pneumonia.
